This past year, I had the honor of illustrating for a set of labels for a local MN distillery featuring many herbs and botanicals. In my research, one stood out to me in particular for its healing properties in herbal medicine.

In the 1930s, Edward Bach, a British homeopath, proposed a system of botanical remedies for ailments of the soul. He believed gentian flower could help someone cope with confronting a surmountable setback that leaves you feeling helpless, but could inspire you to shut down the negative thinking and develop resilience against the series of defeats that try to keep you under.

As someone who experienced setback after setback for months (one could argue years) prior to the pandemic, this little plant spoke to me deep in my soul. Knowing someone many years ago found this blue violet flower, studied it and found it to help them endure what I’m going through now, even in the smallest way.. the image of it alone is an encouragement to keep going— that there’s more on the other side of grief.
